I have no idea what I was expecting with BlazBlue Entropy Effect. I had heard of the fighting game series, but wasn’t the biggest fan, of said series, or even really the genre. But… I do love me some Dead Cells and games of that ilk. So in that respect Entropy Effect at least had my attention

So is BlazBlue Entropy Effect, a spin-off from a completely different genre actually any good?

Simple answer is yes… yes it is.

From the very start, even without much knowledge of the series, this is a game that feels intuitive to play and is honestly just great fun. It is fast paced and the action is silky smooth, with level layouts that encourage movement and enemies that keep you engaged at all times.

I’ve played games in the past that that have been ‘Dead Cell, but different’ that try to really change things up, to the point you know you’d rather be playing the inspiration instead. So whilst I won’t say this does a better job then the best in class. It does basically respect your time by letting you jump in with a prior knowledge, but also without excluding newcomers to the genre.

Yes there is a ‘tutorial’ to get going, but it is one that is tied to the overall experience in a way that just allows you to get to grips with the game. Because the one thing Entropy Effect does add, which I really liked was distinctly different play styles based on the character you pick.

Because this is a spin-off to a fighter where fight style differences are vital, it is great to see something like that here The first time I played, I went at it like I would have Dead Cells in the past, but when I opened up new characters, I found that I could approach things in a different way.

That could be in the way they move throughout a level, the way they combo, the different type of attacks and more. Each new character felt like I could be playing a fresh new game within the 2D Action-Adventure world.

I said earlier that the game was very intuitive to play, which is evident in the fact that you don’t even think about what buttons you are pressing and instead just go with the flow of the game. Something which the best of this type manage to do. You get so drawn in that in many ways it is like you are doing everything naturally.

The fluidity is exceptional, with each time you play feeling like you are in a constant state of movement. There is never a time where you stand still, until you are at an end point. It is remarkable just how well this all just goes together.#

That all before you get to the artstyle. As with the BlazBlue series, this is just stunning to look at in motion. Almost like works of art come to life. The cacophony of colour just hit all your visual senses and take you along for a ride that you never really want to end.

BlazBlue Entropy Effect is a fantastic title and one fans of the genre should absolutely add to the library.
