(Editors note : I tried to stay as true to Bradley’s audio as possible, but have made a few changes for clarity and mistakes in the software. I wish I could have left in the section about “escaped philosophers posing a danger to guests” though)
If there’s two things I love it’s both dinosaurs and city builders so when a chance comes to bring two of those things together I’m going to take it. I’m a big fan of the previous JJurassic World Evolution games both one and two I think are excellent and the third one just takes the series and takes it up yet another level. Now despite what you might think about the films I know some people are not big fans of the more recent Jurassic World films, I personally love them as a bit of a guilty pleasure, the games themselves I think are some of the best movie tie-ins there’s been in years. They take the concept of the film and instead of just going oh dinosaurs are chasing you they do something a bit more with it. Because it’s by Frontier Developments who are known for Planet Zoo and Planet Coaster they’ve got a team that know what they do with the with the park builders genre. So what you get with Jurassic World is you get all the glory of Jurassic Park, Jurassic World and all the dinosaurs with just the solid gameplay of a park builder.
But what you get different here is you’ve got to manage other things such as what happens if velociraptors break out um the danger that they pose to guests whilst trying to get your guests to want to go to your park. With Jurassic World Evolution three is a game really that comes in two parts. You have the story mode or the main campaign which you get to go to a map do some tasks and max out the park ratings, getting the highest rating possible, bringing in the most money and basically unlocking bits as the game goes ion. It’s a really interesting story that’s told um from the perspective of a client who wants to make Jurassic Park work, especially in this new world where humans and dinosaurs have to coexist and so rather than following the films it takes the lore of the films and where they are at the moment and does its own thing with them. It’s wonderfully narrated by Jeff Goldblum, reprising his role as Dr. Ian Malcolm which is really good, introducing each new level and then popping up at times with little bits of commentary on wether choices are good or bad, and sort of dragging things along as well as the character Cabot Finge and others returning from previous games.
What you’ve also got to deal with here isExtinction um Extinction who are a a group who don’t want dinosaurs around, they were extinct millions of years ago and should remain extinct and we shouldn’t have to cohabit with them. They don’t like the fact that your client and in turn you are building these parks to house them and breed them. Overall you go to places in North America then you go over to Asia, into Europe and it goes on and there’s a couple of really nice surprises in there but it’s generally designed just to introduce all the different parts of the game.
That’s the main part and then there’s some challenge modes in there which are more of an off shot, of here’s a scenario deal with it. Where the game really comes alive (and in the campaign itself. I’ve probably put 30 odd hours in at least) and where most of your play will be if you enjoy these games comes in the sandbox mode. From the very start everything’s unlocked there are no restrictions in place you can do what you want. You can create a fully functioning park if you want which is really good plus you get full deformation so you could basically start an island, you can then flatten that island and then build it up as you see fit. You bring in whatever dinosaurs you want, whatever attractions you want
And you can do breeding, you don’t have to do breeding everything you need is there but it’s complete freedom. So instead of building a complete park if you wanted you could just build a really really cool park tour so you might decide to build a river journey with maybe a whole bunch of water-based dinosaurs that are are in there or you might decide to build a carnivorous tour so you’ve got your T-Rex you’ve got your velociraptors any ,of the hybrids that are there. Or you can maybe go and build a really interesting herbivore tour or flying tour but you could mix it all together as well and if you go on Youtube you’ll see people have done some amazing things on there.
You know there’s a really interesting cave tour that someone’s done so you could do those if you want and there’s options there so you haven’t got tohave like a fully working park that’s everything built but you could do that if you want. You could decide okay i’m just going to build my own version of Jurassic Park i’m going to have this section for these types of dinosaurs this section for these types of dinosaurs and I want to make the most money. It’s a sandbox, a proper sandbox that you could do with as you please and it works really really well.
What else works really well with this is it has workshops but instead of being an external workshop where you then have to plug it in so go to like the steam workshop pages or or something like that it’s a built-in workshop mode which is great because you just go to the workshop browse option, see hat there is and download them and they’re available in game. But what is really interesting is you might be building your park and you’re in the middle of doing some bits and you’re going “oh i really want a different type of hotel i think that’ll look really good here” you can then access the workshop from within the game, browse the from within the game download that item and put it straight in. There’s no saving it, quitting out, going to this mode or going to steam workshop finding the thing you want, putting it in then loading it you basically you can press the the button to choose what you want to put down the hotel/shop/science center, activity center whatever you want. Then just another click of the button and you can search what you’ve downloaded or you can go search for more on the workshop and it really allows you to get creative with things.
I play this on the steam deck as I exclusively do and for the most part it runs really really well on lower graphics settings and so on and so forth but it runs really really well. In the campaign mode it can struggle, sometimes it does go a bit slower of, you press a button and you’ve got to wait because it’s hitching a bit and it’s trying to think about what to do, a little bit of a pain but it’s nothing major especially in the campaign mode it’s nothing that’s really stopping you getting to the end of each campaign and then obviously in the store in the sandbox you can work with your own limits should you want to. The previous two games i believe you can play by like Geforce Now and they run really well hopefully this one will be on it at some point so you’ve got that option if you need it. Again, for this sort of game Geforce Now really works well because it’s not fast paced it’s not twitch reactions and things like that so you could take your time.
What i found is now you could start building, you might go i’m going to build a a walking path and then here’s the attraction for some stegosaurus you put it down and then you might spend hours just lining the path with some rocks and some trees. All just to make it so your people walking through have got the right view that they need and they can see the stegosaurus rather than just having to go to the viewing gallery. Plus you can different rides you could put it you can get them to go over on a balloon, they can go in the gyrosphere they can go in jeeps there’s so many different options. If you’re feeling really dangerous you could put a zip line going over the velociraptors, I wouldn’t recommend it but you could do it if you want.
Now it’s not perfect, there’s a few bits especially on the steam deck where it could do with almost like a blueprint mode for you to see your layout where your paths are where bits are like just lined up so that you can then plan out a build on a better view rather than having to do it on the main view, because things can get a little bit lost and it’s a little bit difficult to see at times. That’s a minor thing in all fairness and that’s more iI think an accessibility issue that i would like to see improved on. Overall it works wonderfully well with keyboard and mouse, it works wonderfully well with a controller and alongside games like transport fever 2 this shows that you can make these sort of games work on a controller absolutely wonderfully.
If you love dinosaurs, if you like city builders, park builders anything like that this is an absolute must-have and is the best of the series by far and I i think one of the best park builders out there that’s different from the usual theme park stuff so I highly recommended this wonderful game to you.
